The Next Step
We have enrolled our child into skating...what’s our next step for progressing?
There are many options available for progressing your skater through the skating club.  How far your skater progresses is truly up to them.  Each skater is different and have their own reasons for signing up with the club.  Some graduate through our flagship program, Canskate and then transfer to hockey or ringette.  Some skaters go through all levels and end up being a competitive skater.  Then there are also the few who continue with the skating club, sharpening their skills while still practicing hockey or ringette,  Either way, no matter which path your skater takes, you can be sure that he/she will have the skills needed to get their future started on the ice.
The Starting Gate
When you first sign up with the skating club, you would probably be registering in the Pre-Canskate or Canskate program.  If your skater is new and has limited mobility on skates then you will be entering the Pre-Canskate Program.  Once he/she has developed some basic skills, they will then move up to the Canskate Program. Canskate has 6 stages of development.  There is no set time period that a skater should stay in each of these level but instead is based on their own progression.  The quicker they pick up the needed skills, the faster they advance.  Skater’s are evaluated on a regular basis.
Once they finish Canskate, they can move to Prepreliminary or Prepreliminary and/or Synchro.

Note: Skaters can move from Canskate to Synchro as well.
Prepreliminary is for skaters who wish to learn figure skating within a fun, affordable group lesson environment. This is the first step in your skater advancing in skating techniques at a recreational level.
Prepreliminary acts as a pivot point for a lot of skaters.  From Prepreliminary, your skater can now decide if they wish to continue down the recreational path or jump into the competitive stream.
Next stop down the recreational path ...Junior.
Being part of the Synchro Team will help your skater develop and strengthen their skating skills, it will enable your skater to become part of a team and compete as a team.  It will also develop your skater’s confidence as a single skater.
At this level, skaters must have a private coach.  Junior is for skaters who have completed Jr. Bronze dances or Preliminary Skills.  This program teaches figure skating skills in a group and/or through private lessons in a progressive and sequential manner and includes specifically designed awards and incentives.  Skaters have the opportunity to take Skate Canada Tests through a nationally standardized testing system.  Skaters who have mastered figure skating skill in STARSkate may also choose to pursue synchronized skating or pairs skating.  Junior can jump to the competitive stream on a level that is dependent on their skill level.
From Junior, the next step is Senior.
Senior is for skaters who have completed Sr. Bronze dances and Sr. Bronze free skate. Skaters who are 14 years of age and older may skate in this session under the discretion of their coach.
Senior can jump to the competitive stream on a level that is dependent on their skill level.

Skaters in Pre-Canskate or Canskate have the option to go the club’s CanPowerSkating programs as well.  You skater could also enter CanPowerSkating separately from the the main programs.
